Supply Requests: A Recurring Source of Work

A supply request is a business asking for goods to be found, bought or delivered. It repeats in a way that most task work does not.

Of the six types of work merchants can post, supply requests are the least understood by members and among the most useful — because a business that needs something once usually needs it again.

What a supply request is

A merchant needs goods: stock, materials, equipment, consumables. Rather than sourcing themselves, they post what they need and a member finds it, buys it or delivers it.

The work varies. Sometimes it is purely delivery. Sometimes it is genuine sourcing — finding a supplier, comparing prices, negotiating. The second kind is worth considerably more.

Why it repeats

Restocking is the most predictable cost a business has. A shop that needs a delivery this week needs one next week. A member who handles it reliably is not competing for the next request — they are being asked.

That is the difference between task work, which starts from zero each time, and supply work, which accumulates.

What makes someone good at it

  • Knowing where things are — which market, which wholesaler, who has stock
  • Getting the quantity and specification exactly right, because close enough is usually wrong
  • Being punctual, since a shop waiting on stock is losing sales
  • Handling money cleanly — receipts, change, a clear account of what was spent
  • Saying early when something is unavailable, rather than arriving without it

It builds into knowledge

Do supply runs long enough and you learn which shops buy what, on what cycle, and from whom. That knowledge is the beginning of a business of your own — and it is a more natural route into trading than selling for someone else.

Before you take one on

Be clear about who pays for the goods and when, what happens if the price has changed, and what condition they must arrive in. Handling other people's goods and money carries responsibilities worth understanding before you accept.
