Why the Diamond Acceptance Map Must Be Live

A rewards balance you cannot reliably spend is worse than no balance at all. That is why the map has to reflect today, not last month.

Most rewards programmes fail at the same point: the customer arrives to redeem and is told the shop no longer takes them. That single experience destroys more trust than the reward ever created.

Acceptance genuinely changes

Merchants join the redemption programme and leave it. A shop may find it works, or find it does not suit their margins, or simply close. Participation is voluntary and uncapped, with exit available at any time — which is the right design, and it means the list is never permanent.

A map that does not reflect that is not a map, it is a historical record.

What a stale map costs

A member travels to a shop, chooses goods, and finds the balance is unusable. They have spent time and transport on nothing. The next time they consider redeeming, they will not bother — and a balance nobody bothers to spend makes the whole earning mechanic pointless.

It costs the merchant too, in an interaction that ends badly through no fault of theirs.

Live is a design requirement, not a nicety

The map has to be driven by current merchant participation rather than a periodically refreshed list. When a merchant leaves the programme, they should disappear from it immediately, not at the next update.

Leaving must be as clear as joining

A merchant who feels trapped in a programme exits loudly and tells other merchants. Making the exit clean and immediate protects the programme's reputation among merchants, which is what keeps acceptance growing.

What this means for you

Check the map before you go. If a shop shown as accepting turns you away, report it — that correction improves the map for every member who checks it after you.

The underlying principle

Knomart's guardrails favour mechanisms that can be checked over promises that have to be believed. A live map is one of those: you can verify it before you rely on it.
