A course should help you learn a skill. It should not become a toll gate for proving a skill you already have. That is why completing a Knomart course is not a prerequisite for taking an exam.
What if you already know the skill?
Imagine someone who already has practical bookkeeping experience. Requiring that person to complete an introductory bookkeeping course before being allowed to demonstrate their ability would add time without necessarily adding competence.
The assessment should answer the important question: can you demonstrate the required skill?

It also makes the learning library more useful. Courses become resources members choose because they need or want the knowledge—not boxes they must tick simply to unlock an exam.
But learning can still improve your chances
Not requiring a course does not mean preparation is unimportant. A member who needs to strengthen their understanding can use the written lessons and practise before attempting an assessment. The point is choice: learn because it helps you become capable, not because the system forces everyone through the same starting line.
The principle is simple
Knomart learning should support skill development, while assessments should measure demonstrated ability. Keeping the two connected but independent makes the pathway more flexible and fairer for members with different levels of experience.
You do not have to take a course to prove you can do the work. Take the course when it helps you become better at the work.
